The D303 released in 1991 is one of the best sounding Sony Discman ever made. It is also the first portable CD player to employ a 1-Bit digital to analog conversion. 1-Bit D/A converts are more power efficient, cost less and most importantly it is less susceptible to errors during conversion. The D-303's smooth contoured design is quite attractive. Buttons are well placed and clearly labeled, and the integrated LCD displays useful information such as track number, elapsed time, play mode. There are a couple of smart features that are new to this CD player. When a CD is loaded and the lid is closed, the LCD displays the total number of tracks as well as playing time without pressing the play button. Sony engineers also added an auto shutoff feature to conserve power when a CD is loaded but not in play or pause mode. Playing time with two alkaline batteries is about 3 hours. The BP-2EX rechargeable battery will last for 2 to 2.5 hours when charge for 30 minutes. It also comes with an AC adaptor if you run out of juice during listening. The D-303 retailed for about $330 and is available in titanium or black finish. It is worth mentioning that in 1991 there's another flagship product that sits above the D-303 and that was the D-J50.
